Cancer survivor holds 'dollar a pound' weight loss challenge Barrhaven resident Roslyn Franken is challenging Ottwa residents to lose wieght in support of cancer research this year (2006). The topic is one Franken is familiary with after surviving Hodgkin's lymphoma 10 years ago. Franken's first symptom of her cancer was an incredibly swollen and painful neck, oddly after having tied lobster for the first time. At first she thought she was haing an allergic reacton. The doctors thought it was a virus or mononucleosis, the so-called kissing disease. Finally, Franken went in for an ultrasound when the growth didn't go away. "It was the scarist moment,"Franken says. The technician left the room to get the radiologist who causally said it looked like lymphoma and then walked out of the room. At the time, Fanken didn't what what lymphoma was. she walked by the radiologis'ts office on her way out and asked. he resoded that it was a cancer of the lymph nodes, but not to worry. At just 29 years old, Franke certainly had a difficutl time following the advice not to wrry. She had a biopsy to confirm the diagnosis ad then uner went nine months of chemotheray. "I will never complain about having a bd hair day again. when you have no hair, things change,"Franken says. her first two treatiments with chemotherapy were too close together and Franken suffered terrible side effects. She describes the sensation as similar to a cold sore on the entrie inside of her cheeks. "I put ice cubes in my motha and jst sat ther,"Franken says. ROLE MODELS She says her mother was an incredibe role model for her druing that difficult time. Franken's mother survived the concentration camps in Nazi Germany druing the Second World War. When she was diagnosed with cancer in 1983, she pulled back her sleeve to show the doctor the tatoo on her arm from the camps. "She told the doctors, 'if hitler didn't get me, cancer wont get me,'" Franken says. Her mother was given two years to live, but beat the odds and lived for 21 years, 19 years longer than her diagnosis. Franken's father alos had an incredible story having survived a Japanese prisoner of war camp. "When I thought about what they had survived, I thought I can do this." Franke says. "I went on with my life and took the good days with thte bad." Franken celebrated 10 years since her last treament on Oct. 17, 2005. HELPING OTHERS With that kind of success story, it was natural for Franken to want to help others. Franken's background includes a masters degree in human systems intervention and work as a coach. She describes her degree as the study of how people learn and change. Freanken decided to use her skills to help individuals as a lifestyle coach, but she was challenged by her own weight issues. "It was the pot calling the kettle black," Franken says. She decided to take charge of her own weight in order to feel legitimate in her work. "I came up with a system of working with people to lose weight by changing their behaviour," Franken says, adding that the behavioural changes mean people can keep the weifht off for life. Her approach was described by a client: "you're teaching me to reprogram my relationship with food." Franken says the approach takes into account what hasn't workied in the past as well as current habits, attitudes and behaviours toward food. FUNDRAISER From her work with clients, Franken had the idea to hold a fundraiser for cancer research and patient suport. "I wanted to promotie healthy lifestyles and do something for the cancer foundation," Franken says. That's when she got the idea of a "one dollar a pound" weight loss challenge. Participants look for sponsors to give one dollar to the Ottawa Regional Cancer Foundation for every pound they lose through Franken's program. "I want tpople to lose weight in a healthy iway in order to articipate," Franken says.
