INTRODUCTION

If you're like many others who struggle with food and weight issues, my guess is that you've tried all kinds of weight loss diets and schemes that promise fast and easy results.  How have these worked for you so far?   You're probably here right now because these methods failed you, leaving you feeling even more discouraged than when you started.  Like may others, you ended up going back to your old eating habits and put on even more weight as a result.  But I know you're also here now because you're not ready to give up.  This is a sign of great strength and courage for which I offer you my heartfelt congratulations.  Just by coming this far you've already proven that you want a long-term solution that is finally going to get you the weight loss results you so desire for a life of greater health and happiness.

From my own and others' experiences I have come to the conclusion that going on and off weight loss diets and programs is just as hard on you mentally, emotionally and spiritually as it is physically.  Every time you start anew you set out with the best of intentions, full of hopes and dreams, thinking that this time you have found the magic answer.  So why isn't it working?  The answer is simple.  DIETS DON'T WORK LONG TERM!

How do I know all this, you ask?  I know because not only have I overcome my own food and weight issues, but I have helped many others overcome theirs.  I am a personal coach, educator, author and professional speaker who specializes in helping people learn to eat better, feel better and liver better through healthy eating and balanced living strategies.  My mission is to help people just like you to reprogram their relationship with food and their inner selves for improved health and quality of life.  Although my experience has been predominantly in helping women with their specific food, health, weight, body-image and life balance issues, I have seen through my clients that the men and children in their lives have reaped the wonderful second-hand benefits from watching their partner, mother or sister live a happier and healthier life.  In many cases the men and children of these women have adopted the same changes in their lives and have in turn created greater health and happiness for themselves through healthier eating and more positive living strategies.  All this to say that men and children can equally benefit from the information and insights presented herein.

I do not make false promises or guarantees that you will reach your target weight as quickly and easily as you'd like.  What I do promise is to do my best to help you lose weight slowly and steadily in the most healthy, practical and manageable way possible for sustainable results without going hungry or feeling deprived.

As a cancer survivor I already know and understand what it means to lose your health, which is why helping others improve their health is so important to me.  I know that I may not be able to fully control whether or not my cancer will ever come back, but I certainly know that I can do everything within my power and control to minimize the risks of cancer or any other disease, for that matter, by living a healthy lifestyle of being good to my body, mind and soul.

Overcoming cancer at age thirty forced me to start a journey of self-reflection and search for meaning and purpose in my life.  I yearned to understand myself, others  and the world around me in a much deeper and more meaningful way.  Through this process I learned that my life purpose is to help others in their process of self-discovery and their own personal search for meaning and life satisfaction.  What I have concluded from my ongoing journey is that we all have choices in every thought we have, belief we hold and action we take.  I learned that we create our own realities based on how we view ourselves, others and the world in which we operate.

Therefore, you may gauge your success simply by the number on the scale or the size of your clothes, but believe me when I say that it goes so much deeper than these superficial measures.  Your success will be seen and felt in your brighter eyes, happier disposition, the extra bounce in your step and a greater joie de vivre. It will all culminate in your greater sense of self, improved health and more positive view of yourself, your life and those around you.  That is what it is all about.  Along with guidance, tools and techniques, I will give you the personal support and encouragement you need to turn your health and quality of life around.

Before I continue, I want to thank you for putting your trust and faith in the guidance and support that I am offering you through the experience and perspectives covered in this book.  My intent is to inspire, motivate and help you see that permanent weight loss and improved quality of life IS truly possible.  My wish is that you'll learn that not only is it completely feasible to achieve long-term weight loss and control through healthy eating and positive living habits WITHOUT diets, pills, going hungry or feeling deprived, but that with some proper guidance and support, you CAN do it and WILL do it too.

This book is the first edition of the guiding principles that will empower you to become the next courageous person to take control of their health and weight for lifelong results.  On the first stop of our journey we'll look at how the world around us influences our eating and living habits.  At the next stop we'll look at what is required to rise above those influences and take back control of our health and lives.  The remainder of our journey together will focus on my "A" list including the 9 guiding principles for healthy eating and positive living for lifelong weight loss and control.
